New security rating to influence explosives storage review

THE high national security rating will affect tenders for a security review of Queensland Government explosives storage facilities.

Explosives reserves at Helidon, outside Toowoomba, and Bajool, south of Rockhampton, are part of a statewide tender into a security review.

A Natural Resources and Mines Department spokesman said while the process had been planned well before the national security rating had been raised, the rating would be taken into account.

"The current external security review tender has been in the planning for many months and is not connected to the recent upgrade to the National Terrorism Public Alert status," he said.

"All government explosives reserves operate under security plans that are reviewed and adjusted according to the national security alert status at the time."

Licensed companies and individuals use the reserves to securely store explosives and specific chemicals. The facilities include storage, demolition ranges and explosive workshops.

The department spokesman said the review was scheduled to regularly occur and followed an internal security audit last year.

"The current tender for a risk assessment is part of the planned external security review that is conducted every five years as required by the department's Safety and Health Explosives Inspectorate Security Policy under the Explosives Act 1994," he said.

"All government explosives reserves have comprehensive security plans that include security arrangements tailored for each site; including perimeter security and surveillance, controlled access to the site and security patrols, and the safe and secure storage and handling of explosive materials."
