New store gives sons experience
WHEN it comes to a favourite flavour in the Atkinson household, Wicked Chocolate has no competition.
But the family members, including Donna, Jim, and 16-year-old twins Dylan and Chris, were kind enough to serve their first ice-creams to customers at the grand opening of their Wendys ice-cream store on December 14 in Gracemere Shoppingworld.
Donna and Jim said the store was purchased as a "family project".
They hope to give their sons some experience in the business management and food industries, as well as a chance to earn some pocket money.
"It's a really great community and every
one is very supportive," said Donna.
She also said they were already starting to receive their regular customers.
The Atkinsons' Wendys is the seventh Wendys outlet in the Rockhampton-Yeppoon region and one of the 26 specialty stores in the new Gracemere complex.
"So far it's working well," Donna said.
"Although it has been a little bit difficult with our short training time before the centre opened."
The couple has added six other workers to the family crew to keep things running smoothly.
"We chose people with different ages and commitments so that it is easier to operate once school begins," Donna said.
Donna and one of her two older staff members will take the shifts during school hours, with the afternoon and evening shifts left to the younger employees.
Dylan is interested in pursuing a career in business management or IT and has previously done work experience at another Wendys outlet in Allens town Plaza.
"He really enjoyed this experience and it has helped everyone when we first opened," Donna said.
Chris, on the other hand, is unsure whether he is interested in a career in business.
