A NEWBORN baby is recovering in a Sydney hospital after the family dog mauled her while she slept in her bassinette at the end of her parent's bed.
The alaskan malamute bit the seven-day-old girl on the face during the early hours of Monday morning in the family home at Campbelltown in the city's south-west.
The girl was transferred to the Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick on Monday where she underwent surgery.
Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Campbelltown City Council rangers are working with police and the family to determine the best cause of action for the dog which it understood does not have violent history.
