Newman predicts Carmichael Coal announcement during G20

THE Carmichael Coal Mine is set to get underway early next year despite ongoing legal wrangling, Premier Campbell Newman believes.

Speaking in Townsville yesterday Mr Newman said he expected Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi would announce the mine, run by Indian company Adani, would get underway in 2015.

"For some time now we have been working hard with the Federal Government and one of the major proponents, the Adani Group and also GVK to see these important economic projects get going," he said.

"As I've reflected this morning, we in this government now believe that the Adani project will get going in early 2015.

"We have the G20 in only a matter of a few days and I am fairly confident that we will see a significant announcement there given the Indian Prime Minister is in town."

An Adani spokesman said the company had been clear about its timeline and always intended on beginning preparatory work early next year.

The mine is currently under a legal challenge from environmental group Coast and Country and Indian group Conservation Action Trust.

CAT claims the mine, which will export coal for use in Indian power stations, will increase pollution and harm the poorest Indian's standard-of-living.

Coast and Country, which did not return phone calls yesterday, is claiming the mine will threaten an endangered finch species, damage water ways, and contribute to global climate change.

Mr Newman said Carmichael would create a huge employment boom in central and northern Queensland.

"The point of this is that the Adani Galilee coal project will see 10,000 jobs being created in Queensland," he said.
