NiE The sport of kings

On the first Tuesday in November at 3pm (AEDT) millions of people in Australia and the world, tune in to watch or listen to a horse race that has become an important part of Australia's history and folklore - the Melbourne Cup.

Known as 'the race that stops a nation' it has become one of our country's biggest annual sporting events having been run every year since 1861.

The event is a 3200m handicap thoroughbred horse race run at Melbourne's Flemington Racecourse.

Considered to be one of the richest and most prestigious handicap turf races in the world, it is becoming increasingly popular internationally with more and more foreign-trained horses contesting the race.

The field battles it out for a chance at the $6.2 million in prize money with the winner of the race presented with a three-handled gold trophy.
