Nielsen gets a run

KELVIN Nielsen's strong performance in the trial match between the Skills Training Mackay Cutters and Souths earned him a spot in this weekend's line-up.

The squad has been chosen to square off against Redcliffe in the Round One Intrust Super Cup this Sunday at Dolphin Oval.

Nielsen, 20, is a Cutters contract player and will slot into the hooker position on Sunday.

Head coach Anthony Seibold said the former Mackay Souths junior would bring enthusiasm and aggression from the bench.

"It's great that he's come through from local football and has now got himself a start," he said.

This will be Nielsen's second Queensland Cup game after a taste in 2009.

However an anterior cruciate ligament injury forced him to take a break during 2010.

Last year he played for Souths and Seibold said he was a standout player for the club which made it to the grand final.

This week he plans to train hard in preparation

"Everyone's been training really well," he said.

"Hopefully we will get a good result on the weekend."

It's a challenging start to the season; Seibold said Redcliffe was one of the premier teams in the competition.

But he's confident in the players who have been named in the squad and despite losing some star players to injury in the preseason, the team was still strong.

"One of the big things about our squad this year is that we do have a lot of depth," he said.

"We've got the playing group to compete strongly and obviously it's going to be a tough challenge ... I think they can get the job done."

Seibold said the squad's rusty performance against Souths highlighted a number of areas that needed work, but in saying that he was confident in the boys.

"We had a really strong pre-season and I know that the guys are really keen to get down there and give a good performance," he said.

The squad will head down south on Saturday.

Kick-off for the game is at 2pm on Sunday.
