Nine denies True Story with Hamish and Andy was a stolen idea

CHANNEL Nine has shot down allegations that Andy Lee "stole” the idea for his new series with Hamish Blake from a fellow radio presenter.

True Story with Hamish & Andy, airing on Channel Nine on Monday nights, sees the popular radio duo meet one regular Australian who tells them an amazing, true story from their life.

After Hamish & Andy hear the tale, they set out to recreate it using some of the country's most popular television personalities.

Ahead of the premiere last night, Nova host David 'Luttsy' Lutteral claimed he'd told Andy three years ago about a show he'd dreamt up called Cracking Yarns.

But according to a Nine spokesman, "Radio Karate have confirmed that the format for the program True Story with Hamish & Andy was conceived, and was in development by Radio Karate, over a year before Andy and Luttsy met for a drink in New York.”

According to Luttsy, True Story is "word for word” the idea they'd discussed during the conversation back in 2014.

"I'm just throwing it out there,” he said during the segment on Ash, Kip and Luttsy.

He added that he and co-host Ash Bradnam had even begun filming Cracking Yarns with Channel Nine, but that it was never finished.

"Ash, you were part of the pilot we did,” Luttsy said. "I'd half shot that pilot and then other things have taken over so I haven't actually completed it.”

True Story with Hamish & Andy premiered last night to generally positive reviews from critics.

TV Tonight described the show as "a cheeky delight, and unlike anything else on screen right now”.

The Australian's Stephen Brook wrote: "Today there is cause for double celebration. I finally saw something genuinely new on Australian television - and it was good!”

And Michael Lallo from Fairfax said, "In an era of manipulative reality shows, the pair offer a refreshing alternative: quick-witted humour, devoid of snark”.

True Story with Hamish & Andy returns 7.30pm Monday.
