Nipper Nathan sees no fear when tackling the waves

DIVING into the surf at full pelt with 10% vision would not be everyone's idea of fun, but energetic nipper Nathan Jason thinks nothing of it.

The 12-year-old competes in nipper carnivals four to five times a year, including state championships, and is currently age champion.

While the degenerative condition affecting his eyes continues to reduce his vision, Nathan shows no sign of slowing down.

"I like competing, and being with all of my friends," he said.

Alexandra Headland Surf Club nippers age manager Robbie Elphinstone says Nathan is "a real talent".

"There's no one more courageous than Nathan - running into surf when he can't see a wave coming," he said.

"He's just full bore."

Nathan navigates surf competitions with the help of his dad Vincent or brother Jordan, who paddle beside him and tell him where the markers are.

Their technique caused confusion with visiting judges, who accused them of cheating until locals "sorted them out".

Phil Perren has helped Nathan and his nipper squad since they were six years old.

"Nathan's probably the most inspiring kid you'll ever meet," he said.

Accommodating Nathan has "never been a big deal".

"He's part of the family. It's just what we do," Mr Perren said
