No cause for alarm as car crashes through garage near mosque

IPSWICH police were given a scare when reports came through on Monday of a car going through a garage next to the Islamic Society of Ipswich.

But their concerns were soon allayed when it was discovered an 84-year-old lady had lost control of her car in North Ipswich.

"We had a car into a garage beside a mosque and that was a concern," Inspector Keith McDonald said.

"But we got there and realised there was nothing untoward in the activity of the driver.

"It just happened to be a poor old dear who had a medical episode as she was driving down the road.

"I was only five minutes away when the job went down, so I popped over to have a look."

Australia has raised its terrorism level to high, and as a result local police are now kitted in a way they never were before.

"I have to be fully kitted and ready to go at all times until the security threat is redetermined," Insp McDonald said.

"Normally all I would wear is just a uniform, so now all I have to wear all my accoutrements like my gun and my taser."

Police in Ipswich have their hands full dealing with often violent crimes, as in the case of the taxi driver who was hit on the head by a hammer, but Insp McDonald said the Islamic community of Ipswich was an "extremely peaceful" group.

"They are very good people," he said.

"Probably 90 % of people in Ipswich wouldn't know that we have our own mosque.

"They don't cause us any grief whatsoever."
