No escape in underground coal mines with exits blocked
QUEENSLAND safety boffins are warning there might be no escape for some workers in underground coal mines after inspectors found escapeways blocked off.
In an industry-wide alert, mines and workers are told some critical routes were blocked off by stone, loose coal, water, slurry and even guide ropes that did not take followers the right direction.
"These hazards can impede coal mine workers' ability to escape from an alternative escapeway," it read.
Site bosses have been told to check escape passages and maintain a policy on keeping them clear.
