No off-the-peg gifts at Artisan Handcrafted Market

IF YOU'RE tired of mass-produced gifts, a market with a difference next month will feature the unique works of a dozen local artists and craft makers.

The Friends of the Tweed River Art Gallery are staging their fifth Artisan Handcrafted Market.

Featured will be ceramics, jewellery, crochet, clothes, letterpress and stationery, candles and a host of other handcrafted wares with shoppers also getting to meet the artist behind the wares.

Friends president Lyn Stewart, said: "At a time of year when we can be overwhelmed with mass-produced items in stores and on television, this small market with selected local artisans selling handmade goods is the perfect antidote."

As the name of Currumbin Valley artisan Fiona Watson's business suggests - The Sentimentalist - she is drawn to objects and people from another era.

The high-school art teacher, who makes miniature stitched hoop brooches, laser cut brooches and limited edition hand cut and printed linoprints, will be one of those selling their wares at the market.

Other artists will include Katie Alleva, Sam Messina (Deadwood Creative), Lucy Vanstone, Megan Puls, Claire Atkins (Pinky & Maurice Contemporary Ceramics), Ellie Beck, Karyn Fendley, Jo Olive (Olive and the Volcano), Two Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Sandra Valerio (Into the Woods), Lucille Atkins and Emu Beads by Michele Bevis.

The market is on Saturday, December 7.
