READERS DISCUSS: No public holiday on Anzac Day this year

DID you know there is no long weekend for Anzac Day this year? The annual day for remembrance, held on April 25, falls on a Saturday.

The Holidays Act provides for an extra public holiday to be added when Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Day falls on a weekend, but not Anzac Day.

Australia will this year mark the centenary of Anzac.

Here are the thoughts shared yesterday by some of The Morning Bulletin's Facebook users.

Levi Moores: That's not Australian.

Melissa Putman: The point of the public holiday is to remember the fallen and who went and fought for us... Not for ppl to just be able to have a 'long weekend'... If that's how ppl see Anzac Day, then those ppl don't deserve a day off anyway !! Respect !!

Mark Ramsay: Businesses should be closed on Saturday as respect for the Anzacs.

Mathew N Melissa Pipe: There is no need for Monday to be a holiday. The dawn services and marches will be held on the Saturday as that is Anzac Day. I think people need to show some respect and realise what the day is about instead of just thinking about themselves and whether they get a long weekend or not.

Trixie Dee: What's the difference if it falls on a Saturday or say a Wednesday. It's still ANZAC Day and should be celebrated for those who lived and died for this country. A little RESPECT would be nice. LEST WE FORGET

Maria Finlay-Frenken: there should NOT be a public holiday for ANZAC day, you do not need a public holiday for ppl to go away, we remember every day and celebrate our freedom on 25th April , but ALL businesses should be closed ALL day as a mark of respect.
