MP caught speeding in school zone

IPSWICH MP and former Transport Minister Rachel Nolan says she is “kicking herself” after being caught speeding through a school zone.

Ms Nolan was caught doing 51 kilometres an hour in a 40kmh school zone outside Blair State School on Friday.

Ms Nolan said she wasn't aware it was school time despite there being flashing lights warning of the school 40kmh zone.

It is the sixth time she has been fined since she entered parliament in 2001.

Ms Nolan said she was embarrassed to have been speeding but she declined to say if she thought she had a problem with driving too fast.

“I didn't realise it was school time but that's no one's fault but mine,” Ms Nolan said.

“As Transport Minister I saw a lot of evidence about the safety benefits of even small speed reductions, so I am kicking myself for having lapsed.”

Ms Nolan's previous speeding tickets included one in 2001, one in 2003, two in 2004 and one in 2009.

After her previous indiscretion she said she would make an extra effort to slow down.

“I am on the road a lot – my work responsibilities in Ipswich and Brisbane mean that I need to do quite a deal of driving,” she said.

“I take driving safely very seriously.”
