Gunman taken into custody following all-night siege
UPDATE 8.30AM: POLICE have taken a 49-year-old man into custody following an incident in Burston Street, Mackay.
The man surrendered to police without incident at about 7.20am.
The emergent situation declared under the Public Safety Preservation Act in response to the incident was revoked at 7.33am.
There is no further information available at this time.
UPDATE 6.30AM: POLICE are continuing to negotiate with a man in Mackay following the declaration of an emergent situation in Mackay last night.
Around 8.45pm police responded to concerns for the man's welfare at a Burston Street residence.
Police received information that the man was alone and armed with a firearm inside the address and an emergent situation was declared at 10.45pm.
The PSPA has been declared between the areas of Burston Street bounded by Malcomson Street, Valley Street, High Street, Berry Street and straight line from Norris Road back to Malcomson, with motorists advised to avoid the area.
Residents in the vicinity are being asked to stay indoors while police respond to the situation.
EARLIER 2.30AM: POLICE have cordoned off parts of North Mackay and warned neighbours to stay inside, declaring a siege situation now underway in Burston Street.
Police negotiators are now on the scene, attempting to coax out a man with a firearm.
There is nobody else inside.
The siege is understood to have begun when police responded to a call about a disturbance at 8.45pm on Wednesday.
The area cordoned off covers the areas of Burston St bounded by Malcomson St, Valley St, High St, Berry St and a straight light from Norris Rd back to Malcomson.
Drivers have been told to stay away from the area and those living nearby told to stay inside.
