Norths Chargers rack up 70-point victory

RUGBY LEAGUE: It was all one-way traffic at Browne Park on Saturday night as Norths Chargers went on a try-scoring spree against Gladstone Brothers.

The defending champions were unstoppable, running out 70-point winners against the visitors.

Competition frontrunners Yeppoon racked up a similar scoreline against Woorabinda, while Biloela and Tannum Sands also enjoyed comfortable victories.

But in one of the upsets of the season, Gladstone Valleys accounted for Rockhampton Brothers 20-14 in a hard-fought contest at Marley Brown Oval.

Norths coach Kane Hardy was happy with his players' commitment and focus in the one-sided contest.

"We just stuck to our game plan, our completions were high and our discipline was good,” he said.

"They stuck to everything that we had worked on for the game. We could easily have lost control and started throwing the ball around but we didn't.

"That was a good sign for us moving forward.”

Stand-in skipper Darcy Davey was instrumental at hooker and was ably supported by Mitchell Forrest who produced arguably his best game of the season at five eighth.

Davey, John Filipo and Matt Jarvis each bagged a double in the victory.

Hardy said teenage sensation Elijah Anderson turned in another brilliant performance before he suffered a serious shoulder injury in the dying minutes of the game.

"That's disappointing for our team and for him because he was just getting better and better. We've got our fingers crossed it's not as bad as we think,” he said.

Norths' next opponents are Valleys, who will be riding high after their win over Rocky Brothers.

"I think they're going to be one of the teams to beat this year. They've got a lot of good players including Tarrant Mariner and a few other blokes with Q-Cup experience so that's definitely going to be a tough game,” Hardy said.

"We've just got to worry about us and keep doing the little things right.”
