Not just barra, sharks get sick too

COMMERCIAL fisherman Trevor Falzon is sick of hearing about "bl**dy barramundi".

Mr Falzon went netting for barra in the Calliope River on Friday afternoon.

Instead he pulled up 10 "diseased" bull sharks.

He said all had symptoms like those seen lately in barramundi, including redness and lesions.

He wasn't too worried when he pulled up the first shark, but by the time the second and third were out of the water, he was very concerned.

Government observers were also aboard. Mr Falzon said they took scrapings to be tested.

"They looked really bad.

"It's not exclusive to barra, it's sharks now too."

Mr Falzon was furious with Fisheries Minister Craig Wallace.

"I got pi**ed off when the minister said it was only barramundi (that were affected)."

That wasn't the only grievance Mr Falzon had with the minister. The Friday before, Mr Falzon caught 44 barramundi in the Boyne River.

He said 90% of the catch was unhealthy. Biosecurity took 16 of these fish to be tested at CQUniversity.

"There was not one healthy specimen, but in Parliament last Wednesday, the minister said only one was no good.

"The test results haven't even come back yet - how could he know?"
