First impressions: The Block fans and faves meet tonight
THE real reno competition is about to heat up on The Block.
After dealing with their two Queensland opponents, the two fan teams now must face-off against experienced Block-heads Alisa and Lysandra and Brad and Dale.
The four teams will transform South Melbourne's Dux Theatre into four luxury, loft-style apartments over 10 weeks.
"You've got to do 10% on top of what you think is fantastic; it's not an easy show to be on," host Scott Cam told APN.
"It's a very interesting turn of events as the first couple of weeks unfold. Obviously you've got the bathroom queens and the boys are very experienced… of course, the favourites think that they know everything but we soon sort that out (laughs)."
Fresh from their victories, Newcastle's Kyal and Kara and Melbourne's Chantelle and Steve will come face to face with the two returning teams tonight.
The fan teams thought they were going on a regular season of The Block, while the returning teams thought they were going on an all-stars series.
"We had no idea we'd be facing ex-contestants," Kyal said.
"We are pretty big fans of the show, so it was a bit of a shock."
Kyal and Kara cut short a holiday in Bali to compete for a spot on the show.
"We flew home from Kara's sister's wedding in Bali early and went straight into (Monday's) challenge," he said.
"We wanted it really bad… I didn't expect to get emotional but I just couldn't help it."
It will be a steep learning curve for the sun-kissed surfers, despite Kyal's skills as a carpenter.
"I came into this show assuming that I was probably more prepared than I could ever be; we'd just renovated our own home over the past three years," he said.
"But there is nothing that can prepare you for what you're stepping into when you go on The Block. It's the hardest thing I've done."
By contrast, former Adelaide police officers and twin sisters Alisa and Lysandra knew just how hard of a slog another series of The Block would be.
"We definitely had to think twice about coming back on the show, but it's just one of those opportunities you can't say no to," Alisa told APN.
"We came on this show to push the boundaries a bit more, and we've definitely done that."
Despite the fans versus faves theme, Alisa said all of the teams had formed friendships.
"There's no rivalry this year… it's so different to last season," she said.
"The fan teams have been pretty cool from the start."
All four teams will take on more architectural responsibilities this year, with their apartments beginning as just shells with no walls or ceilings.
But first there's the business of deciding who gets which apartment.
The teams will compete in a challenge tonight to decide who will have the first choice.
The Block: Fans vs Faves airs tonight at 7.30pm on Nine/WIN.
