Nurse suspended after unlawful weapons possession charge

A NURSE who had been employed at Mundubbera Hospital has been suspended from practising by the Queensland Health Ombudsman after he was charged with the unlawful possession of weapons.

Russell Douglas Drinkwater, 53, had a prohibition order placed on him by the Health Ombudsman, preventing him from nursing after he was arrested in March.

Police allegedly found 92 firearms and 280kg of ammunition on Drink

water's 2225ha property near Monto, west of Bundaberg, on March 3.

They described Drinkwater as a "doomsday prepper" who was fearful Australia would be invaded.

The statement released by the Health Ombudsman stated that immediate registration action had been taken against Drinkwater and he could not work as a registered nurse for the duration of the suspension.

The statement said an interim prohibition order had also been issued against Drinkwater, which meant he could not perform nursing duties in a clinical or non-clinical capacity "which relates to the provision of any health service".

Drinkwater was also suspended by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

According to information on the agency's website, Drinkwater's registration was due to expire at the end of this month.

He was released on bail to appear in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on June 11.
