Tow truck owner holds up police after killing cow

THE owner of a tow truck business obstructed police after one of his vehicles hit a cow on the Bruce Hwy near Alligator Creek.

One of 45-year-old Balberra man Dean Allen Pullen's tow trucks, insured for $900,000, had been damaged and another car was involved in the collision.

Prosecutor James Grehan told Mackay Magistrates Court that on October 8 last year, police were taking details at the crash when Pullen approached and asked where the cow was.

When police answered, Pullen said "good, I'm going to go and cut his (expletive) ears off".

Mr Grehan said police told Pullen they would be taking possession of the cow's ear tags as part of the investigation.

Pullen said he needed the tags to claim insurance.

He was warned that he could be charged with obstructing police, and after leaving and returning he said "do whatever you want you weirdo, get onto someone with some authority and they will tell you the same thing".

Police attended Pullen's business Mackay Heavy Towing on February 25 this year and he was charged.

Defence solicitor John Wilson told the court Pullen was anxious to collect the right details because the excess on the tow truck's insurance was $90,000.

He said Pullen had contracts with Mackay police, but he had previously had "difficulties" with Sarina police.

He said Pullen's tow truck licence would be under threat if a conviction was recorded, putting his 12 employees' jobs at risk.

Magistrate Nerida Wilson suggested a police report would have sufficed for insurance purposes.

She fined Pullen $750 and did not record a conviction.
