Off-duty lifeguards save man caught in rip from drowning

OFF-duty lifeguards saved a man from drowning yesterday morning after he was swept up in a strong, fast-moving rip at Noosa.

It was a case of being at the right place at the right time; about 13 Noosa Surf Club members had gathered at Sunshine Beach for early morning training when they were flagged down by a man.

Club member Paul Jenkinson was one of the off-duty life guards and said it happened about 6.45am.

"We were just getting ready on the beach to get back into the water when a man called out to us asking if we were lifeguards," he said.

"He told us there was a man about 50-60m out to sea, caught in a dangerous rip, waving for help.

"We ran down towards the water and saw the man, his wife was standing by the edge of the water."

Mr Jenkinson, alongside swimming coach and training officer Tim Mandeville, jumped in the water and swam to rescue the man.

It didn't take long for the rip to carry them out.

"He was very, very fatigued," Mr Jenkinson said.

"We were able to bring him in and another bloke jumped on the water to help out.

"When we got to the shore he told us he had walked out to a sandbar but the current knocked him off his feet and just like that.

"He hadn't swallowed any water so he didn't go to the hospital, but he was exhausted.

"There were no flags or anything, he was lucky we were there for training or who knows what could have happened."
