Olympian Gaze calls for end to the NBL

WITH a record eight Australian-born players plying their trade in the NBA and even more in the strong European competitions, the game should be enjoying a golden period.

Instead it's a basket case, with one of the sport's greatest players, five-time Olympian Andrew Gaze, saying the time had come to shut down the NBL and come up with a new model.

Speaking on Melbourne radio station SEN the day after Townsville joined Wollongong in voluntary administration, Gaze likened the situation to "death by a thousand cuts".

"I have never held this view at all throughout this challenging phase of the NBL, but I have reached a position where I think they are better off regrouping and shutting it down," Gaze (pictured) said.

"Even if these two teams somehow find a way to get through administration, nothing is going to change significantly to turn around their plight because it is a slow burn. So shut it down, regroup and get the right model because the model is broken."

Hopes of a Brisbane team re-entering the competition next season have all but disappeared, with potential backers baulking at demands from the NBL.

Perth is already well advanced in discussions to create a pre-season competition involving several teams from Asia, with club officials saying it was becoming more difficult to survive financially with less-and-less teams playing in the NBL.

Without a CEO since last November, the NBL has made no official comment on the crisis.
