On ya bike for biggest gathering of Capricorn Coast riders
THERE are plenty of cyclists on the Capricorn Coast, but not all of them know each other.
That's why Cruisn' By owner John Auriac along with BUG (Bicycle Users Group) decided to hold a community bike ride event to bring everyone together.
"There can be a bit of separation sometimes when it comes to cyclists, like slower more causal riders might not associate with serious riders and things like that," John told the Capricorn Coast Mirror recently.
"What I want to stress is that we want as many cyclists as possible on the day to set a local record for the coast's most cyclists assembled.
"We want anybody that rides, old, young, commuters, sporty or just anybody that loves getting out for a ride. We would also like everybody to dress in their best cycle outfits as there will be a prize for the best dressed."
To be held on Sunday, from John's store on Farnborough Rd, the event will include bike displays and more, plus a leisurely group ride out to Mercure Resort and back.
Vice president of BUG Jan Boyd said she hoped the day would create an opportunity to grow their membership as well.
"A bigger group has a got a lot more clout to some degree," Jan said.
"I think one of the most important issues is traffic awareness on both sides. Because cycling isn't just a sport, it's a sustainable mode of transport, it's a lifestyle, and it's good for your health."
Everyone is also welcome to bring along their own second-hand bikes and gear to swap or sell on the day.
BUG treasurer Paul Hoolihan said bike riding was a great way for him to switch off. "It's the freedom of it, you don't have to think about anything while you're doing it," he said.
