One dead in Carmila crash

A MAN is fighting for his life in Rockhampton Hospital this afternoon after a crash on the Bruce Highway which killed a 24-year-old man and put three others in hospital.

A head-on collision near Carmila this morning closed the highway for hours as rescuers struggled to free the dead and injured from the wreckage.

The driver of one of the cars died at the scene while a 23-year-old man who was driving one of the cars was transported to Mackay Base Hospital in a serious condition.

The 48-year-old driver of the other vehicle was airlifted to Rockhampton and is said to be in a critical condition although there is no word yet on the nature of his injuries.

A 45-year-old woman, was being operated on at Mackay Hospital this afternoon.

Huge tailbacks built up on the highway which was still closed to traffic this afternoon, with no indication when it might re-open.

The accident happened about five kilometres north of Carmila at about 9.30 this morning.
