One dead as plane crashes in Melbourne's Chelsea

AT LEAST one person is dead after a light plane crashed in the Melbourne suburb of Chelsea.

Victorian Police have confirmed that one person perished at the crash site, in the waterside area, about 30km from the city centre.

Police are yet to report any other injuries.

Video of the aftermath of the crash has already been published on radio station 3AW.

The Age is reporting the plane crashed into two houses at about 1.30pm NSW time, or 12.30pm Queensland time.

Residents attempted to bring a fire sparked by the crash under control using garden hoses and fire extinguishers.

The dense nature of the crash site means social media site Twitter has lit up with images of the scene.
