1 of world's largest at Rocky airport

IF you were driving past Rockhampton Airport today you would have found it impossible to miss this monster.

The Russian-built Antonov 124 aircraft is one of the biggest in the world.

With a top speed of 865km/h, this 405,000kg giant (the max weight at takeoff) was in town loading cargo for the Singaporean Airforce as part of their local exercise.

When it was first built, the Antonov 124 was the largest aircraft in the world.

About 60 of them have been built.

It takes on a flight crew of six consisting of two pilots, two flight engineers, navigator and communications operator.

The upper deck behind the flightdeck area features a gallery, rest room and two relief crew cabins.

Upper deck area behind the wing can accommodate up to 88 passengers. 

Main deck cargo compartment can carry a range of bulky and oversized cargos.

The Antonov 124's total payload in weight is 150 tonnes.
