Only one in 20 eating enough fruit and veg

NEW figures show that only one in 20 Australians eat enough fruit and veggies according to the Queensland Cancer Council.

About one in four children from five to 17 and 63% of adults are overweight or obese.

The national health survey released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed only one in 20 adults and one in 20 children ate the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables daily for optimum health.

The recommended amount is two serves of fruit and five vegetables each day for adults and for children one serving of fruit and 2-3 serves of veggies. 

A serve of vegetables is half a cup of cooked vegetables, one medium potato or one up of salad vegetables, about 75g.

A serve of fruit s one medium piece or two small pieces of fresh fruit or One cup of diced fruit -150g.

Cancer Council Spokesperson Katie Clift said researched showed overweight people overestimate how healthy their lifestyle is.

"Weight is often seen as only one part of the concept of having an overall healthy life," she said.

"Up to one third of all cancers are preventable through simple lifestyle changes including engaging in physical activity, eating healthily, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol and quitting smoking."
