Opera Australia sacks soprano for homophobic letter

OPERA Australia has cancelled their contract with Tamar Iveri after public backlash at homophobic comments made by the singer.

Ms Iveri was slated to play Desdemona in an upcoming production of Otello until a public Facebook post she made to the Georgian President damning homosexuals surfaced.

The post was about a gay rights march, where she said she "was quite proud of the fact how Georgian society spat at the parade."

"Often, in certain cases, it is necessary to break jaws in order to be appreciated as a nation in the future, and to be taken into account seriously.

"Please, stop vigorous attempts to bring the west's 'faecal masses' in the mentality of the people by means of propaganda, " she said in the post.

Opera Australia made their own post to Facebook today, announcing the Soprano's dumping from the cast.

Ms Iveri has previously blamed the comments and the letter on her husband using her Facebook account, describing him as a very religious man with a "though attitude towards gay people".

European news outlet Pink News is also reporting that Ms Iveri has been dropped by a Brussels Opera house for the same comments.

Should Tamar Iveri been sacked for her letter to the Georgian President?
