Orphaned joey sole survivor

THE last remaining survivor of a kangaroo slaughter at Booral at the weekend was clinging to life in a humidicrib yesterday.

The hairless joey was rescued from his dead mother's pouch after horrified horse riders found more than 20 carcasses strewn about acreage at the end of Wheeley Rd.

Most joeys were shot at point-blank range, but three were found alive and rushed to a wildlife carer in Maryborough.

On Tuesday Childers carer Faye Fishlock (pictured with the joey, below) picked up the joeys and took them to her special humidicrib, but by yesterday morning the female joey "Sarah" was the only one still alive.

Ms Fishlock said she had seen many joeys live from the three-month point and believes Sarah has a fighting chance.

The Department of Environment Resource Management is investigating the shooting that claimed the life of Sarah's mother and other roos treated as pets by those living in the street.
