Rockhampton’s shining star Our Boy Malachi is beatable

AT THE risk of being judged disloyal but by no means wishing to be so, I believe Rockhampton's shining star Our Boy Malachi is beatable in today's $75,000 Newmarket Handicap (1300m) at Callaghan Park.

While being brazenly foolhardy in going against the tide of opinion and emotion which have Our Boy Malachi home and hosed in the feature race, I'll cheer as loud as any should he win.

Make no mistake, I'd love to see Our Boy Malachi swish his tail in defiance of Rockhampton Newmarket history and rightfully be acclaimed a superstar in the process.

It's well documented that to win today Our Boy Malachi has to break a 48-year hoodoo and become the only horse since Reggie (1965-66) to win successive Newmarket Handicaps.

Furthermore in the process, "Malachi" has to carry 59kg and become the highest weighted Newmarket winner since Kero carried 61kg to win in 1980.

It would indeed be records smashed aplenty, as Our Boy Malachi's jockey Adrian Coome would join jockey Jack Curran to become the only one to ride three Rockhampton Newmarket winners in nearly a half century.

Curran's trio of Newmarket winners since 1959 were Glenway (1960); Kinglet (1962) and Prevail (1967).

Coome won the Newmarket last year on Our Boy Malachi and six years earlier as a teenager on George Osborne's Nediym's Image.

Which leads me to my Rockhampton Newmarket selection - Achievements - whereby a win would rewrite the big race annals in the trainer's category?

Achievements' trainer Darryl Hansen has already won two Rockhampton Newmarkets with Onalar in 2008 and Perugin Thought from the disqualification of his 2011 winner Essington.

Rated overnight at double figure odds with betting agencies, Hansen said he has specifically set Achievements for the Newmarket.

"I've had him (Achievements) set for the Newmarket for sometime. He has raced twice from a spell for fourths at the Sunshine Coast and Ipswich and both were good runs. Michael Cahill got off him last start (June 4) and said I was on target with him for the Newmarket", Hansen related.

Rating Achievements chances Hansen said: "He is very consistent and tries his guts out. From the good gate (5) with Jim Byrne, I think we are in with a good chance".

In another twist in the Newmarket tale, Hansen's wife Debbie races Achievements on lease from former Gladstone racing identity Marino Katsenevas.

A win would be compensation for Katsenevas as well, as he owned Essington which was controversially disqualified from its Newmarket win in 2012.

Achievements is over due for big race glory in the north as last year he was runner-up in both the Mackay Newmarket and Townsville Cleveland Bay Handicap.

My Newmarket selections are: Achievements, Our Boy Malachi, Craiglea Falcon and Living On A Prayer.
