Our lifestyle measures up
HE works in Western Australia, lived the past four years on the Sunshine Coast, but Greg Lancaster now calls Rockhampton home.
He is one of an increasing number of home buyers snapping up property bargains in the Rockhampton region.
And with REIQ figures for the March quarter indicating the highest number of Rockhampton home sales in years, we have overtaken Gladstone and Mackay in the sales stakes.
"I have noticed the market was moving fairly quickly," Greg said.
Greg said the Sunshine Coast lifestyle was getting too fast paced for him, and he wanted to get out of suburbia.
A fly-in, fly-out worker in the remote Pilbara region in Western Australia, Greg's job in health, safety, and environment management training in the mining industry takes him away from his family for weeks at a time, so deciding where to live was all about lifestyle.
Greg said they had looked around all of Central Queensland to see what was available, but found Gladstone to be overpriced, and Calliope to be already built-up.
He said with family in Rockhampton, including his first grandchild, buying here was the obvious choice.
"We have always enjoyed this neck of the woods."
Loving the outdoors, Greg said he was looking for something with a bit of land, and a pool, but found homes they were interested in were sold before they were able to come up to the region to see them.
"We found a lot of stuff was getting snapped up."
So when he found a home that ticked all the boxes, they made an offer within 24 hours of their first inspection.
"We were lucky to get it."
Adrian Haks, residential manager at Herron Todd White, an independent property advisory service, said there had been an increase in sales in the lower end of the market.
He believed investors were looking to Rockhampton because houses were more afford
able and you could still get a reasonable rental return.
"It has a lot to do with affordability," Adrian said.
