P-plater hits work ute, takes off

A HIT-and-run P-plater gave Yeppoon's Sam Hayman the fright of his life yesterday.

Sam said he and his wife were lucky not to have been killed when they were involved in a collision on the Rockhampton-Yeppoon Rd, just before Seonie Park, about 11.50am.

"We came over the crest of the hill and saw a white Hilux ute coming in the wrong direction on the double lanes straight towards us," Sam said.

"We were travelling (towards Yeppoon) about 90kmh and I believe he would have been travelling at least the same speed.

"I immediately applied the brakes and we skidded towards each other, we impacted on the driver's side guard and pillar.

"The driver of the other vehicle went off to the left of the road up the side of the hill and came to a stop."

Having pulled over and gotten out of his hired work ute - also a white Hilux - which was damaged at the front, Sam went to see if the couple in the other car were okay.

"Before I got to his vehicle the young guy driving re-started his car and took off, proceeding down the wrong way of the highway," he said.

"These young guys did not even have the decency to check whether we were okay."

Police attended the incident and urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
