Traffic control still in place at Woodburn after fatal crash

UPDATE: 9.13am: The Pacific Highway has reopened under alternating (stop/slow) traffic conditions at Woodburn after a fatal truck and car accident yesterday afternoon.

Diversions have been lifted now that motorists are taking it in turns to travel on the Pacific Highway in both directions.

Motorists are advised to allow additional travel time and to exercise caution.
Traffic crews remain on site.

UPDATE, 6.10pm: Police have confirmed that the driver of a sedan involved in a crash on the Pacific Highway at Woodburn has died at  the scene.

Shortly before 5pm, emergency services were called to the scene, at the intersection of Wondawee Way, following reports of a crash.

Officers from Richmond Local Area Command attended the location and found a semi-trailer and a sedan had crashed head-on.

The driver of the sedan died at the scene.

Believed to be the only occupant of the car, the person is yet to be formally identified.

Paramedics treated the driver of the semi-trailer at the scene, before taking him to Lismore Base Hospital, where he will undergo mandatory blood and urine tests.

It is understood he suffered burns to his hands.

A crime scene has been established and will be examined by specialist officers.

The Pacific Highway is currently closed in both directions and diversions are in place.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible and check www.livetraffic.com for updates.

ORIGINAL REPORT: A SERIOUS crash involving multiple vehicles has blocked the Pacific Highway in both directions at Woodburn.

The crash is about 300m north of the Black Rocks turnoff.

Spokesmen from NSW Fire and Rescue and NSW Police confirmed emergency services were at the scene, but could not confirm any further details about injuries.

Witnesses said there was at least one car that had been completely destroyed by fire.

Rural Fire Service brigades are working to extinguish bushfires on either side of the highway.

Live Traffic NSW has advised motorists to avoid the area, wiht heavy traffic and significant delays.
