Pakistan long odds for a win against Aussies

RECENT form suggests Pakistan would face a huge task trying to beat Australia in the World Cup quarter-final at Adelaide Oval tomorrow, even with a full-strength team.

Unfortunately it doesn't have that luxury, with TattsBet rating the 1992 winners at $4.40 to spring what would be one of the upsets of the tournament.

Already without a host of star players, injury has now claimed towering quick Mohammad Irfan, diagnosed with a stress fracture of his pelvis.

It isn't the first time the 216m Irfan, who had captured eight wickets at an average of 23.25 in his five games at this World Cup, has had similar issues.

He spent nine months on the sidelines after sustaining two fractures in the ischium bone of his hip in November 2013.

The loss of Irfan could see paceman Ehsan Adil, who impressed in the previous game against Ireland, retain his place alongside fellow quicks Wahib Riaz, Rahat Ali and Sohail Khan.

Ali has been one of the surprise packets, picking up seven wickets at 22.14 in the past four games, with Pakistan winning all of those.

The team's campaign has been plagued by the unavailability of key players, including top-ranked spinner Saeed Ajmal who was sidelined prior to the tournament because of flaws in his bowling action.

Off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez, whose bowling action had also come under scrutiny, picked up a calf injury in the week before the tournament began and had to be replaced.

Seamer Junaid Khan (knee) was also forced out at the last minute, his place taken by Ali, while experienced quick Umar Gul was not considered for the tournament following surgery on a knee injury last May.
