Mum’s outrage over toddler hair removal tip

A MUM has slammed a parenting magazine for an article that suggests "waxing and plucking" a three or four-year-old's upper lip.

Blogger Sturdy Mom Central, from Wisconsin, called out the latest issue of Parents magazine for highlighting the beauty treatments as"safe" ways to get rid of a preschooler's "moustache".

The article, entitled Normal or Not: Hair on a Preschooler's Upper Lip, featured a photo of a young child holding a fake moustache over her mouth.

It told how almost every child has hair on their upper lip, and thick and coarse hair on a little boy or little girl in that area is "only a problem when it starts to impact their happiness and self-esteem".

The article advises parents to take their child to a doctor to see if there is a "hormonal imbalance".

If there isn't, as a way of getting rid of it, it suggests carefully cutting the strands with scissors, or waxing and plucking for "kids who can handle the discomfort".

In response, Sturdy Mom, who has a one-year-old son, wrote on Instagram: "I am APPALLED at @parents magazine for this article stating that it is okay to wax or pluck your PRESCHOOLER'S 'mustache' (sic).

"The featured picture even makes me angry. What is this teaching our young children about appearances? It is absurd! #parentsmagazine #sturdymomcentral #bodyimagemovement."

One of her followers felt the same, writing: "100 per cent agree. What the heck?!"

Sturdy Mom told Yahoo Lifestyle: "This is in the current issue of Parents magazine. I just received it in the mail this week.

"I love Parents magazine but I was appalled when I saw this. What is this teaching about body image? And for preschool?"

The Sun Online has reached out to Parents Magazine for a comment.

Last year we told how a mum shared a photo of her two-year-old daughter's perfect eyebrows that beauty fans compared to Kim Kardashian's.

In August we revealed one mum spent thousands helping her seven-year-old daughter become famous, splashing out on fake tan, make-up and eye-catching outfits for her pageants.
