Parents and carers to have voice on best child care system

PARENTS and carers in Capricornia, including Rockhampton, West Mackay, Sarina and the coalfields are urged to have a say in a historic inquiry into child care.

Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry said the Government this week announced the start of a Productivity Commission inquiry into child care and early childhood learning.

"It delivers on the Government's commitment for an inquiry to examine how the child care system can be made more flexible, affordable and accessible for mums and dads and carers," Ms Landry said.

The inquiry is the first public examination of its type since the 1990s.

"As I travel around the region, I find that for many busy parents and families, the childcare system is clearly past its use-by date," Ms Landry said.

"Families in Capricornia deserve quality care and early learning at a price they can afford. Our government is committed to working with parents and services to look at more flexible, affordable and accessible child care and learning choices for their children."

The inquiry will report back on current and future needs in the sector, the different types of care available, changing work patterns within families and how future government assistance should be paid.

The Productivity Commission will conduct public hearings and invite submissions as part of the inquiry process and is expected to report by the end of October 2014.

Ms Landry said local parents and carers were encouraged to make a submission.
