5-star Uber driver kills in horror crash

A PLAYBOY Uber driver has been jailed for killing a 97-year-old pedestrian in a horror crash after a night of wild partying.

Jacky Pak-Keung Wan, 30, embarked on a 12-hour booze-fulled bender before getting in his car and driving from the city to Box Hill on October 7 last year.

The idiotic drive ended when he hit and killed a 97-year-old grandfather of nine after running a red light.

He later told police he was a good driver with a five star Uber rating.

Wan had spent the night before the tragic fatal working as an Uber driver, clocking off at 4am.

He slept then headed to the Corner Hotel in Richmond to watch a band with a mate about 8pm.

From there he went to Crown where he gambled into the early hours, before continuing to drink and party at two separate city nightclubs.

Feeling tired and drunk Wan got in his car to drive home about 8.20am, stopping at Hungry Jacks on Punt Rd to get food.

He then tried to drive to his Mitcham home via the Eastern Freeway sometimes stopping along the 100km/h stretch of road as cars sped past him.

His near miracle run came to a tragic end when he hit and killed the 97-year-old man as he crossed a pedestrian crossing.

The man was struck while crossing Whitehorse Rd, towards Linsley St, in Box Hill.

The loved great grandfather was treated by paramedics at the scene, but died shortly afterwards.

Much of Wan's crazed drive was captured on his own in car dash camera.

Sentencing him to a term of eight years imprisonment today Judge Frank Gucciardo said it made for "harrowing viewing".

He said Wan ignored a traffic signal that had been red for six seconds, hitting his victim at 57km/h.

He made no attempt to stop.

At the time experts estimated he had a blood alcohol reading between .102 and .116.

Wan hadn't slept for 21 hours.

"Clearly the combination of fatigue and alcohol intoxication resulted in very poor driving," Judge Gucciardo said.

"The community will not tolerate the taking of human life by acts of gross negligence."

As a result of the fatal accident Wan had his Uber license confiscated.

Wan, who had no prior criminal history, pleaded guilty to a single count of culpable driving causing death.

He must serve a non parole period of five and a half years.

His drivers licence was also cancelled for six years.
