Pen Pals meet after three years
EMMY Clark and Laura Bowman have been friends for years, even though they had never met.
They talk almost every day and often stay up late just to chat.
Until Wednesday, Emmy had never been able to give Laura a hug.
Emmy lives in Rockhampton; she’s an inspirational 17-year-old who has battled through eight open heart surgeries for a condition she’s had since she was a child.
Laura lives in Canada but despite being on the other side of the world, she’s been a tremendous amount of support for Emmy over the years.
The pair met on a writing website and have been pen pals for about three years.
A couple of weeks ago the Make A Wish Foundation organised for the girls to meet each other.
Emmy was almost shaking with excitement as she waited for her first sight of Laura at Rockhampton Airport this week.
Laura, rugged up in a jumper after leaving the Canadian winter on Monday, put her head in her hands before she rushed in for a warm embrace.
It was a wish come true for Emmy, who had her eighth open heart surgery earlier this year.
For the next week Emmy will show Laura around Rockhampton, introduce her to new friends and talk about all things Twilight.
“I’m so excited. I’m going to take her to see a kangaroo and make her try Vegemite,” Emmy said.
Laura will be in Australia for eight days, accompanied by her mum.
The Make A Wish Foundation got involved with Emmy thanks to family friend Sheila Thorne, who organised the wish.
“I just figured that if anyone deserved a wish come true it would be Emmy,” Sheila said.
