Joining the fight against diabetes

AS THE number of type one and two diabetes cases surge in Ipswich, a personal trainer is joining the fight to get those at risk of the disease back on their feet.

Statistics released by Diabetes Australia indicate the disease has risen by 50 per cent in the past four years in Ipswich, the Lockyer Valley and Scenic Rim regions.

The statistics show 5 per cent of people in Ipswich and the surrounding areas are living with the condition.

In a bid to combat the rising cases of diabetes in the area, PhysFitt owner Judy Scott is running the Lift for Life program.

She runs the Federal Government's Healthy Communities Initiative from a studio in her Springfield home.

Mrs Scott said the program was modified to each individual and was aimed at increasing lean muscle mass to combat diabetes.

"I've got a lady who is 70, that has come in and is quite overweight. I start them off on very simple exercises and I work with the client as they get more confidence," she said.

The program runs in three eight-week blocks and is designed to encourage a lifestyle change.

"We talk about exercise as a medicine. Some of the ones who come here and don't have diabetes but have arthritis and cancer, they feel a lot more agile in the every day things that they do, they are a lot more stable," she said.

"With the incidence of type two diabetes increasing at such a rapid rate, we want to offer a program to our community that helps prevent, manage or even reverse this condition and some other chronic diseases."

The sessions are run in groups of five and Mrs Scott hopes the social interaction will encourage the participants to carry on once the course has finished.

Ipswich Health Plaza Exercise Physiologist Nadia Nestor said any exercise was a positive for diabetes sufferers.

She said the most likely excuses for avoiding exercise was a lack of enjoyment or if people were time poor.

Starting is the hardest thing, but it can be as easy as walking to the shops, she said.
