Nikola Petkovic faces ban after red card upheld

The FFA's match review panel has upheld the decision of referee Ben Williams to send off Sydney FC defender Nikola Petkovic in the Sky Blues' 3-1 FFA Cup quarter-final defeat.

The panel, consisting of Simon Micallef, Alan Davidson and Con Diomis ruled there was no obvious error and Petkovic would serve a one-match ban and miss tomorrow night's clash with Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium. Williams handed a red card to Petkovic (pictured) for a supposed high tackle on Fabio Ferreira towards the end of normal time. The game went into extra time at 1-1 where Bruce Djite struck either side of half-time to secure the victory.

Straight after the game Sydney coach Graham Arnold said he thought his team would have won the game without the red card and hoped the match review panel would rescind the ban.

Sydney could still appeal the suspension.
