Petros sets sights on 7 summits
FROM Mount Jim Crow to Mount Everest, Rockhampton’s Petros Khalesirad is aiming for the top.
The city businessman plans on climbing the largest mountain in each of the world’s seven continents, including Mount Everest.
Yesterday, a couple of days after a training hike up Mount Jim Crow, Petros, 28, spoke about his three-to-five-year plan and what is driving him.
He said he wanted to inspire people to be more active and at the same time showcase the region to the world.
“I want everyone in our community to be part of this journey because we can all benefit and I can’t do it without you,” Petros said.
“What I am trying to do is empower change in our region.
“Instead of pushing people through the door, I want to pull them through.”
He said he wasn’t seeking personal gains.
“I don’t want to be commended for climbing the seven summits,” said Petros.
“No matter what you want to achieve in life, to take people to the top you have to get to be at the top yourself.”
Under the guidance of personal trainer Glen Hansen, Petros is undergoing a tough regime to make sure he’s ready.
In March he heads to New Zealand for alpine and mountaineering training.
He said the inspiration to climb the seven summits came to him suddenly.
“I woke up and it came to me,” said Petros, a father of two.
“It’s such a big idea and I’ve been thinking now about what else I can do while I’m doing this.”
He said people could join him on his local adventures or for his Tuesday and Thursday recovery jogs through the CBD.
One of the initiatives he’s putting together is a video, highlighting areas in the CBD where people can exercise.
He said plenty of people were getting involved.
Businesses too can jump on board.
“When I stand at the summit of a mountain I want people from our region to know that they got me there.”
