MMA: Karate king turned mixed martial arts master, Brandt Cogill has likened organising Fitzroy Martial Arts' inaugural fight night to a fight preparation.
Two months of hard work in the build-up, pressure and nerves on the night and the welcome relief when it's all over and the gut-busting effort has been worth it.
So it was with the Fitzroy Fight Night, with the action-packed program playing out in front of a sell-out crowd at the Gracemere Hotel on Saturday.
Spectators were treated to eight quality bouts of boxing, kickboxing and mixed martial arts.
"It all went really well. We had a knockout, a few bouts won on submission, some on decision and a couple of TKOs,” Cogill said.
"There were some great fights on the night and some very good sportsmanship on show.
"The spectators were treated to about three hours of action and the feedback was really positive.
”Everybody had a great time and plenty of people were asking when we were doing it again.”
Cogill said the opening bout between boxers Jacob Neuss (Rhino) and Blake Hughs (PCYC) really set the tone for the night.
"Those two young fellas put on a great display and it was a really tough match-up.
"Jacob Neuss won that one but they both worked really hard.”
Luke Ruddick from SnakePit Muay Thai scored the only knockout of the night, landing a powerful head kick on rival Milton Wilson (Rhino) in the second round.
Cogill was impressed with Trent Minor from Fitzroy Martial Arts who scored victory in his first mixed martial arts bout against Andrew Welsh (Rhino).
"He got a first-round submission which was a great result for his first fight. He carried out everything we had practised and looked good,” he said.
"Our other competitor, Callum Sloan, lost on decision. He went the distance and did exceptionally well in his first fight against a very good opponent.”
Cogill said the fight night was organised to give local fighters the chance to compete locally.
He thanked the FMA members who donated their time and expertise, the fighters and coaches for their dedication and sportsman-like conduct and everyone who supported the show. "I also have to thank Gavin Pitts and staff at the Gracemere Hotel, referee Peter Hickmont from MMAA and the judges who helped out on the night and our sponsors, All Pump Repairs, Autoworx, ASN and the Sun Palms Motel.
"Given the success of Saturday night's event, I'm pretty sure FMA will be hosting more events like this in future.”
