Photo jogs memories of 1958 inferno

THE memories have come flooding back for a former Rockhampton CBD worker who witnessed a fireball rock the New Zealand Loan building in 1958.

Alfred Young, who was working at the Walter Reid Centre at the time, shared his memories of that day after seeing a photograph from the Morning Bulletin's new Blast from the Past section.

The picture was published in the Saturday, December 31, edition.

Mr Young said gas cylinders in the building exploded and one landed in the gutter of Quay St.

"It was peeled open like a can," he said.

"They also had stocks/reels of barbed wire.

"They ended up on the intersection of Bolsover and Williams Sts (500m away)."
