REVEALED: When Coast's first mosque will open
PLANS for the Coast's first mosque are pushing ahead with a tender for building work hoped to go out soon.
Sunshine Coast Muslim leader Imam Zainadine Johnson said design and engineering specifics were being finalised for the Church St site.
Imam Zainadine said he was looking forward to having a designated place of worship.
The Muslim community has been using the Kawana Family Centre in Buddina for Friday prayers.
Imam Zainadine had hoped last year the Maroochydore venue would be ready for worship to begin in January.
But the planning has not moved that quickly.
A call for builders to tender is expected to go out in the next fortnight or so.
"Hopefully someone will want to build it," Imam Zainadine said.
He expected about 70 people would use the venue every Friday when the sermon was delivered, with smaller numbers coming to pray on other days of the week.
"We are hoping to get it done before Ramadan (May 27)."
Meanwhile, Imam Zainadine said he had enjoyed meeting with other religious leaders, police and community members since starting in his role in October last year.
"It's good to meet some positive people."
