Builder sped off from RBT, punched police officer in face

A 50-year-old builder from the Sunshine Coast was charged with six offences, including serious assault of a police officer, following an alleged incident on Gladstone Rd on Tuesday afternoon.

Blair Edward Campbell appeared in Rockhampton Magistrates Court yesterday following a night in custody.

Campbell was charged with one count each of possessing a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop, serious assault of a police officer and two charges of obstructing police.

Police will allege Campbell and a female passenger were stopped at an RBT on Gladstone Road at 4.30pm and recorded a blood alcohol content of zero but sped off when police wanted to search his car.

The court heard Campbell was intercepted on North St a short time later when he punched an officer in the face.

Police allegedly found a .22 calibre rifle in the car which was registered to Campbell, but the registration expired on October 1.

The court heard Campbell was on bail for an unrelated matter at the time.

Magistrate Michael O'Driscoll granted Campbell bail to re-appear on January 13 next year.
