Police say dead body is missing man

QUEENSLAND Police divers last night located the body of man believed to be that of a 22-year-old New Zealand national missing from a moored charter boat at Hook Island in the Whitsundays.

The occupants of the boat alerted police when the man fell overboard yesterday morning while sitting on the vessel in the Marcona Inlet around 12.50am.

The man was wearing only blue boxers at the time.

An RACQ CQ Rescue air crewman said: "During the search yesterday, we spotted quite a number of very large sharks in the area so we were extremely concerned for the New Zealander."

After returning to their Mackay base from aerial searching yesterday afternoon, the service was asked to continue searching at first light this morning along with another six to nine helicopters plus fixed wing aircraft.

It's believed the crew was stood-down after being notified the man's body was discovered by divers not far from where the charter vessel was anchored when the man went overboard.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner on the death.
