Police chase disrupts peace

RAY and Darren Deahm were relaxing in the sunshine outside of their Ballina home on Wednesday when their serenity was suddenly interrupted by two fast-paced detectives with their guns drawn.

The plain-clothed officers were engaged in the pursuit of 23-year-old Nike Buchanan.

Police were called to a domestic incident at a residence in Russell Stat Ballina at 11.30am.

Buchanan allegedly threatened one of his family members with an iron bar.

He already had a warrant out for his arrest after breaching his parole and had been wanted by police for some time, Richmond Local Area Command duty officer Acting Inspector Jackie Lilley said.

Acting Insp Lilley said police surrounded the premises but Buchanan fled on foot.

He remained on the run for an hour, changed his shirt and jumping a number of neighbour’s fences in a determined attempt to evade police.

Buchanan was eventually caught by police hiding in a garden in nearby Marsh Ave.

Resident Ray Deahm said he saw police cars scream into his street before two officers jumped his side fence.

“I had no idea what was going on,” he said. “There were two cops with their guns drawn and they went down the side of the house and peered over the back fence.

“They looked in the garage and then they left. It only went for about three or four minutes.”

Another resident, who asked not to be named, said she heard someone yelling “run” before police invaded the street.

“At the eastern end of Russell St there was a bit of a commotion in a maroon station wagon,” she said.

“A man and a woman were yelling at each other and someone yelled ‘run, run’.”

Buchanan has been charged with being armed with intent, common assault, intimidation and revocation of parole. He was refused bail.
