Two arrested for conspiring to plan Sydney terror attack

POLICE believe two men arrested in Sydney raids this morning were conspiring to conduct an act in preparation for a terrorist attack.

A 20-year-old Raby Bay man and a 15-year-old boy from Georges Hall were arrested at their homes in Sydney's western suburbs.

The charges relate to material seized during raids conducted in December last year.

"It will be alleged in court the men were involved in formulating documents connected with preparations to facilitate, assist or engage a person to undertake a terrorist act," a police statement said.

A further three people are expected to be arrested today.

Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner National Security Michael Phelan said the arrests proved long-term investigations were still yielding results.

"The Joint Counter Terrorism Team conducted disruption activity to ensure the safety of the community last year, and has continued to examine the evidence gathered and investigate potential criminal offences," he said.

NSW Police Deputy Commissioner of Special Operations Catherine Burn said information from the community was vital to disrupting home-grown terrorist operations.

"It is disturbing that we continue to deal with teenaged children in this environment," she said.

"To be putting a 15-year-old before the courts on very serious charges that carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment demonstrates the difficulties law enforcement face."

The pair are due to face court today.

The 15-year-old will appear before the Children's Court.
