Police helicopter pursuit ends in charges for two near Logan

Police have arrested a man and woman and charged them with attempted armed robbery and driving offences after Polair 1 tracked an alleged stolen vehicle at Logan last night.

Police will allege that around 8.50pm Polair 1 was tracking a vehicle due to the manner it was being driven on the Mt Lindsay Highway, including driving on the incorrect side of the road and at one point the front passenger tyre being driven on its rim, with sparks flying.

The vehicle exited the Highway, driving erratically through several Logan streets before entering the Pacific Motorway (M1) at Springwood, heading southbound.

A police officer performing duties at a road works site at Springwood deployed a tyre deflation device which the vehicle drove over.

The car continued on the Motorway before coming to a stop at a City Road, Beenleigh service station.

The male driver, and his female passenger, attempted to steal a car parked at the service station. The man, armed with a screw driver, opened the driver's side door, threatened the 23-year-old driver and attempted to pull her out of the vehicle. The other woman opened the passenger side door and jumped in.

The pair fled on foot however after being confronted by the police officer from the road work site who had followed them.

The driver, a 23-year-old Holmview woman and a one-year-old male child in the vehicle at the time were not physically injured.

The man was taken into custody following a short foot pursuit. The woman attempted to flee in the original car but was stopped by police on City Road.

The man, from Fortitude Valley, and a 23-year-old woman from Mount Ommaney, have both been remanded in police custody overnight and will appear in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court this morning charged with one count each of attempted armed robbery, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and failing to stop. The man has also been charged with driving under in the influence of liquor or drugs.

Four vehicles travelling along the motorway at the time sustained damage to their tyres after the tyre deflation device became caught up and tangled in the damaged front wheel rim of the stolen vehicle.
