Woman critical after bashing

AN elderly woman seriously assaulted in Rockhampton this morning is in a critical condition in hospital.

The 81-year-old was found in the front yard of a George Street residence about 8.30am.

Rockhampton Detective Inspector Jon Wacker has addressed a media conference this afternoon.

A police manhunt was under way this morning after reports the woman was covered in a white powder which may have come from a fire extinguisher, possibly used in the attack.

A police dog squad was called in to search for a man.

The man is described as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in appearance, approximately 172cm tall with dark shoulder-length hair, a moustache and goatee.

He was wearing a black t-shirt underneath a red flannelette shirt and three-quarter length denim shorts.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
