Police investigate hotel brawl
MIDDLEMOUNT: A 20-year-old man is in a stable condition in the Royal Brisbane Hospital following a brawl in Middlemount in the early hours of Saturday morning.
A hospital spokesman said the man, who had sustained head and spinal injuries, had been moved out of the intensive care unit into a ward.
The man had been transported from Middlemount to Rockhampton before being transported to Brisbane.
Detectives are still trying to unravel the sequence of events that led to the man's horrific injuries, when he was either king-hit or crash-tackled during scenes of brutal mayhem in the street outside The Middlemount Hotel.
It is believed at least two simultaneous fights erupted outside the hotel just after midnight and the pub was closed at the time of the incident. Police said it appeared the brawl was liquor-related.
Mackay Inspector Rohan Burke said three detectives from Mackay had been sent out to Middlemount to assist the Moranbah detective working the case.
He said it was expected they would gather about 30 statements from witnesses as part of the investigation.
“It's going to be a drawn out process,” Insp Burke said.
He said there were no arrests yet and he could not determine how long it would be because it would depend on the evidence police gathered from the statements.
